Look at you all with your flashy up-to-dateness.

PS2 over here.

I am torn actually between getting an Xbox or a PS3.

ah the old PS3 - 360 debate.

Since you've already got a PS2 the PS3 is the logical choice as I think it's backwardness compatible. You also get a blu-ray player and there's no annual subscription to use the online facilities.

Personally I prefer the IP on the XBox, so that's why I picked it.
I've also got an N64 and an original XBox, but nothing more retro than that.

When I first got my PS3 about half of the PS1 and PS2 games I had wouldn't play on it so I had to keep the PS2 around, but after a few online updates (that install automatically if you have it setup that way) all the old games play on there now.

It's also nice that you can copy your game saves on to a memory stick and keep them safe on your computer, also the reverse works where if you go to Gamefaqs.com you can acquire game saves that can be copied to your PS3, if you're too lazy to actually play the game and unlock everything. Sadly though they don't even have a PS2 memory card reader so all of your old saves are stuck on the PS2, though you can create virtual memory cards on the PS3 so you can still have PS1 and PS2 game saves on your PS3.

If we're having a retro discussion, I have:

Super Nintendo
Nintendo 64
Game Cube
PS1
PS2

The SNES, the Cube and the PS2 are out and setup. the others are packed away atm.

A SNES! amazing. That was the first console we ever had. My brother got one for a christmas present and we just spent years mastering Mario Kart and SFII.  I spotted a battered copy of Mario Kart in gamestation the other week and it was priced at £20! I managed to get a copy of SFII for the XBox so can still get my fill of that - although i prefer SFIII now.

I was tempted to get a Cube, but since the Wii is backwards compatible i figured could always just play those game through that.

I don't use the N64 much, just when me and the missus fancy another rematch of Goldeneye.  I only bought it about 6 months ago - managed to get the console, Goldeneye and a nifty little N64 carry bag for £10.

I never really got on with the PS's, not sure why.

I've got an Atari Jaguar plus a tonne of games, also a Sega Mega Drive with roughly two games.  I can't use either of them though as I need a particular type of RF lead.

Also knocking about the house is a Spectrum and an Atari STe (with a whopping (for the time) 4Mb RAM), a Gameboy Advance and Sargeant Sempron (the PC I built with my own fair hands and thus am reluctant to get rid of even though it's temperature sits at a worrying 70 even with extra fans and a stylish wind tunnel).

When the Playstation came out I didn't like it, my sister had one but it just didn't interest me - I had my Jaguar!  Then the PS2 came out and my other half bought me a cheap, chipped original, plus a load of games.  Then I played the games that hooked me for life: Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 8, Demolition Racer, Tetris Plus.

If you haven't tried those then you're missing out on pure classics.

I'm thinking of getting a BBC Microcomputer.

guys, you really should read 'retro gamer' it's a monthly magazine in the UK dedicated to all things gaming prior to the year 2000. It's brilliant, they have great articles on retro machines and classic games.

I Can't believe you've got a jag! I don't know anyone else who owns one. I also had an ST with 4 MB back in the day, but I had the FM, not the E. I loved my ST I had a second disk drive, a monitor and a scanner for it! I used to make games on it using shoot-em-up construction kit. I also used it for music when I turned into a spotty teenager.

Retro Gamer is the only magazine I read (unless New Scientist has an interesting front cover).

It's both a nostalgia-fest and a source of information.

I want a feature on tiny sprite making (like a lot of Sensible games - Mega-Lo-Mania, Sensi Soccer).  My sprites look rubbish - how did they make them look so great with an 8x8 grid to work on?

My Jaguar was great back in the day.  Sensi Soccer, AvP and Syndicate were great, but could anything match the majesty of...

TEMPEST 2000

That's a permenent entry in my all-time top 10 games.

OMG.

just reading the last couple of posts, a few things stick out for me..

Sensible Soccer
Mega-lo-mania
Shoot-em-up Construction Kit

These three were so full of win!!

I still play Mega-lo-mania and Sensible Soccer on my Mega Drive emulator, but I'd forgotten about Shoot-em-up Construction kit. Oh the hours upon hours I whittled away drawing space ships and enemies, and plotting the paths for the enemies to take, even down to drawing whatever the ships fired.

Good Times.

I'm currently playing a new game, Alpha Protocol, it is truly awesome. A mix between Metal Gear, Splinter Cell, Fallout and Deus Ex, my all time favourites. A few critical problems though, the camera doesn't turn when you turn so you have to keep turning it manually to see where you're going, and the boss battles are getting really tough now and I've barely begun.

Ah, IK+, with the speed whacked up to "turbo" - great days.  I'd say I like that better than SF2 (Super Turbo Whizzy Bang Edition (on the SNES)).

I used to spend hours playing Team Yankee, hunting down pesky Soviets in a tank.

I want someone to update Llamatron - we need more Yak dammit!  I spend hours on that game.  I blame it (and Teserae - a Tetris version) for ruining my eyesight.
